*Research Method in Table 13.3, I found most interesting*

The Performance Research method in table 13.3 was most interesting to me; mainly because last semester I took a Performance Ethno. Class and I learned how to analyze performances. We also performed the performances in front of the class and acted out as different characters and as ourselves as well. Performance Researchers focus on, "Analyzing the social and/or aesthetic meanings of performances. Sometimes they write about performances they have observed; at other times they uncover the meanings of texts by actually performing them." (Trenholm. P. 375) If I were to study some aspects of deception, my research question would be; "How does an interviewee perform in front of an interviewer to indicate they are the best candidate for the position." I'd choose to use Performance Research to answer the question; mainly because it's consisted of stepping in the shoes of the other person and seeing their prospective. Also, the interviewer has been in the interviewee's shoes at one point in their career, therefore they can give the person the benefit of the doubt. And make their best decision using indicators and can discover the uncover meanings of texts and read between the lines.

  1. Hey LINDERZ143:

Thank you for your post. I really enjoyed learning about the method you found most interesting. Performance research is the method I’m most unfamiliar with and the most curious about knowing more. A few questions for you: 1) What did you enjoy most about the course? 2) What stretched you the most during the semester? 3) If applicable, how did your understandings in the course improve your COMM Studies program experience?
Also, I liked the research question you posed for your study. I enjoyed sitting back and reflecting on how I have “performed” during interviews and how both the interviewer and the interviewee are “performing” in some aspect during the process.

  2. Hi Gunnerisfunner, (its too bad I dont know your real name hehe'-no worries)

    Great questions by the way!

    1. Well, I took the class with David Terry, and what I liked the most was that he was really into the class and passionate about it.Therefore, he made learning fun and each student got into it. We were able to shine all of our different personalitys.

    2. The class allowed me to perform for the audience and not as myself. In other words, to not worry about my nerves or what people were thinking watching me-we learned not to perform for "me" but for the audience and really get into our characters and not worry about people's thoughts during the performance.

    3. Overall, the class allowed me to understand communication non verbally and verbally within performances. As being the performer and being apart of the audience. Both have two different roles and I was able to embody characters as if I were really them. Not only did I perform as myself, but performered as a classmate in the room and talking about myself in 3rd person.

I'd definitely recommend taking the Performance Ethno. class, you'd be glad you did =)

    Cheers!
